Maura Reed was born in Nashville, TN and received a BA in Interior Design with a minor in Fine Art. Her mother was an artist and enrolled Maura in formal art instruction at a very young age. Maura worked as a commercial interior designer for about 3 years, and then left to pursue abstract painting — a profession that would last two decades. In 2008, she decided to try her talent in digital art. Maura took some time to talk to us about her background and favorite products.

I found out about Zazzle after looking for some notecards to print my abstract photography. I’ve been designing since 2008 — that first year was a complete learning experience. I love designing for business cards — it’s my niche. I would describe my style as: elegant, professional and stylish. It’s mostly understated, but with a bold touch of either color or design.

Here are my top 10 tips for other designers and sellers on Zazzle:

1. Love what you do.

This is mandatory.

2. Be patient and persistent.

Understand it will not happen overnight.

3. Only post your best work.

In time your inventory will grow as you continue to sharpen your skills. If you have a store that only displays great designs, then the customer will have more trust and confidence in you as a designer.

4. Be true to yourself.

Always strive to be better….never stop educating and inspiring yourself. This is a constantly evolving industry. Surround yourself with great talent, read books, take a class, join great blogs and visit museums.

5. Be original.

Be known for what makes your work stand out.

6. “Know when to put the brush down.”

Every fine artist understands this. For me, the same goes with designing business cards. I try to keep my designs simple, yet memorable – not busy or overdone.

7. Find a niche and stick with it.

The longer you are with it, the better you will become. In time, you will be known for your talent and skill.

8. Create a smart and professional header.

Every single time your customer clicks on one of your Zazzle product pages, they will see it. It sets a stage and is an extension of your professionalism. It’s almost like an online business card in itself.

9. Get feedback.

If you’re not sure if it’s good enough, ask other designers on the forum. The forum is a wonderful place — very supportive and resourceful in so many ways. Make sure to visit it often.

10. Balance your life.

Balance keeps everything in perspective and keeps us from becoming stagnant, burnt out or stressed. It keeps you fresh.

Father’s Day Series: Top Gifts for Grandpa

There’s something about grandparents that’s so much easier and calmer (sometimes) than being with parents. Grandparents can swoop in and spoil you, and leave the tough stuff to Mom and Dad (the changing, disciplining, overall child-rearing). You have two generations of distance (and, some would say, a common enemy!).

As part of our Father’s Day series, we wanted to include a salute to all grandfathers, who can act as second fathers or the best of friends. Doting, devoted, seasoned, sarcastic: they’ve seen it all, and have the best stories and advice (or, perhaps, dated advice that’s still entertaining and unforgettable).

We sometimes associate grandfathers with free time (assuming they’re retired), and therefore a lot of coffee. We all know how much they can like their chair, their paper, their mug, so why not give him another one that’s unquestionably his — that he can add to “my collection”? DIY Baby Shower Series: Scratcher Postcards

For this DIY Series, we’ll teach you how to use products from our site to add the perfect, personalized touch to a baby shower.

First, scratcher postcards for a “gender reveal” baby shower.

Is it a boy or a girl? Turn an ordinary baby shower into an occasion to announce your baby’s gender with family and friends.

Gather everyone and have them participate in an interactive game, where they’ll have to scratch a card to find the answer.

Supplies:

1. Gender reveal postcard (this is a template product, so feel free to include the messaging inside the balloons).

2. Silver acrylic paint

3. Dish soap

4. A plate

5. A paintbrush

6. A coin

Step 1: Personalize the scratcher postcard with the correct gender.

Step 2: Pour three parts acrylic paint and one part dish soap on a plate.

Step 3: Mix the paint and dish soap together.

Step 4: Paint inside the balloons to cover the answer, using 2-3 coats of paint. Let the paint dry between coats and repeat until you can no longer see the text.

Step 5: Let dry. (It might take up to an hour to dry).

You’re done!

Provide the finished scratcher postcards to your guests and hand them coins. Have them guess the gender and scratch to see the answer! Whomever gets it right can get a special treat.

3 Pinterest Tips & Tricks

Pinterest is one of the fastest-growing platforms and is a perfect tool to help promote your store and products.

While pinning is important, making sure your pins can be easily found is just as critical. Here are 3 tips for optimizing your pins:

1. Keywords

“Long tail” keywords are used to refine search terms and cater to specific types of searches. Typically, it’s a phrase around three to five words in length. Don’t just use “flower” — use “yellow daisy flower.”

Make sure your pins are highly searchable; customize the product name, refer to a specific location, target a gender, etc. Choose your keywords carefully in the pin description.

2. Hashtags

Proper use of hashtags will make your pins easily discoverable. Search for the most popular hashtags relevant to your design and include them in the pin description. For example, if you’re pinning a wedding invite, use #weddings or #bride.

3. Backlinks

Consider adding your store’s URL in the pin description. Doing so will amplify your store’s exposure when your pin is shared or re-pinned.

The article I saw said that if you only use one program, it's only like $20/month. And frankly, I spend more than that on lunches during the week. So it might not be quite that bad. However, very crappy for people without internet connections that can handle it or for ways to pay the fee constantly (credit card problems, in other countries, etc.) I see GIMP getting a lot of use and support in the near future.

I don't need anything they have other than Photoshop. It's the only thing I use other than Audition (sound editing) which I don't think is available on the monthly subscription and don't want a newer version anyway. I also don't need storage space since I have 3 DVD burners, a gazillion DVD's, a 1 terrabyte external hard drive which is only 1/3 full. My ISP's give me more than ample room to store files, and I also have Shootprox, DropBox, and one other if I need space. So a monthly subscription to Adobe is nothing I need. I just hope they don't figure some unethical way to disable earlier versions which have been paid for. I know CS5 phones home looking for any upgrades or bugfixes, just like Flash and everything else so I'm sure they could disable it if they wanted to.

Gimp is still sounding like a pretty decent alternative which I think a lot of people will end up switching to.

Dio (Paisley in Paris) always knew she was creative, and worked as a full-time graphic artist for well over a decade before stumbling onto Zazzle. She soon found her niche in stationery. Dio took some time to talk to us about her background and her favorite products.

I love stationery — invites, stickers and address labels. I love designing for baby showers and birthday parties, while keeping the designs minimalistic and whimsical with a pop of color.

I’ve always been a doodler and it shows in my work. I keep my designs the focal point and include minimal text.

I went to this presentation about the Creative Cloud by Terry White. There is some interesting stuff in it that you don't hear so much about. A friend of mine loves the website builder in it (Muse) and it does have some extras you don't hear about.

One thing that is sort of ok about this is that you can write off the monthly subscription fee I believe. I think you end up being able to write off more of the software expense than with the old model. But don't quote me on that because I'm not sure and it could vary by country. If I can do that it might be worth it for me. Although I'm not all that enamoured with having access to a bunch of programs I'm likely not ever going to use. Right now I use Photoshop and Illustrator. So I don't know what other real advantages I'd get with the subscription. The included cloud storage space is not really enough to be worth it I don't think. I guess I find the offering a bit too pricey because I also didn't upgrade all the time. I'm still at CS3 and I'm fine with its feature set and others have found CS6 to be buggy.

In terms of how you work it's generally business as usual, except having to check in once a month. What bugs me is if I let the subscription lag for any reason at all, I can't open any files I created on the newer versions because of issues with backwards compatibility.... unless I save the files intentionally for CS3. That's annoying. I'm tied to a subscription to open up my work... so you pretty much have to keep paying regardless of how life is going at any given time. They've taken away options for how people work and that is crappy. I really see the new generation of designers and photographers moving away from Adobe now. Hobby photographers are just not going to pay the subscription I don't think.

We shall see though.

I use gimp. I was looking at buying Elements a while back. I had the opportunity to try it out for a while and I really wasn't impressed. Glad I didn't waste my money. While the cs version might be great, gimp has a lot more features than elements. Gimp feels a little bit clunky compared to ps, but not enough to detract.

It seems like this is a perfect time for another company to step up to the plate with a program and take a decent chunk of the market away fom adobe.

I also think it's an awful idea....great for Adobe to prevent pirated software I guess but crap for small, indpendent users. I decided a while back to stick with inkscape for my vector stuff (I find it so easy to use). My sister swears by GIMP as a photoshop alternative so when my version becomes too outdated I may give GIMP a try.

I have CS5, can't install CS6. Computer is too old. So I'd not only have to pay by the month I'd also have to buy another computer. Strongly looking at Gimp as an alternative. I really hope this idea bites them real hard. With looking to cut expenses rather than increase them, I'm not going with their "idea".
